Syria is often called the cradle of civilization and the gateway to history. It exported the alphabet to the West, and has been a great crossroad for trade between the Mediterranean and the East.

Syria has an area of about 185,050 sq. km (about 71,498 sq. mi.), and a population of 20 millions. Damascus, its capital, is considered the oldest continuously inhabitant city in the world
